POP! – Modern day fashion, a book and an exhibition

POP, in art, fashion and design has been described as ‘The most significant cultural phenomenon of the 20th Century’ and is making a resurgence this year with the launch of a fantastic new exhibition in London, an accompanying book on the subject and a raft of designers producing fashion influenced by the movement.

The Exhibition can be found at the The Fashion & Textile Museum in Bermondsey until the 27th of October and is simply heralded, ‘POP! Design, Culture, Fashion 1955-1976′. It tracks the life of Pop Art as it grew from the rise of teenage rock ‘n’ roll culture of the late fifties through the swinging sixties, via psychedelia and into the glam and ethereal imagery of the seventies. Often graphic, intentionally humorous and innovative when at its best, it was a an art movement that escaped the elitism of the ‘art world’ and became fused with popular design and culture. Hence ‘Pop’.

Set out in chronological order the galleries in Bermondsey lead you through the excitement. From space-age surrealism  with a piano coffee table with Sputnik legs, through to a Mary Quant tableau, very Op as well as Pop and on to the hurly swirly years of post psychedelic romanticism that could be found on LP covers, boutique graphics and within the pages of cool magazines such as Nova and Oz.
