Love hearts, Cupid’s arrows, pouting lips and honey bees: Delfina Delettrez’s gorgeous fine jewels have become the sell-out sensation of the season. We caught up with the 22 year-old jewellery designer – and fourth generation of Italian fashion dynasty Fendi – to find out just what inspires her.

How would you describe your signature style?
Precious, surreal, ironic and unconventional.
Who is your style icon?
Marchesa Casati (the early 20th century eccentric Italian heiress, muse and patron of the arts who famously said, “I want to be a living work of art.”)
What places in the world inspire you?
Every new place I go to where it’s possible to come in to contact with traditions different from my own. The most exciting thing it is to find inspiration in unexpected places, which usually happens when I am on holiday and my mind is free.
How do you start designing your jewellery?
From my own personal needs: I love to create what I feel like wearing myself.
What materials do you like to use in your designs?
Unexpected materials that create difficulties and challenges to work with. For example, I love marble because when you make a mistake you have to start over and over again. The challenge is to give a sense of lightness to such a heavy material; it’s so fragile; in spite of its strength, you always have to protect it!

Has your family’s design heritage helped you in your work?
My family have taught me the importance of details and craftsmanship, the beauty of the tailoring defects to your advantage, that beauty of can be found in everything.
How important was your time at Chanel to your personal aesthetic?
Working for Chanel Haute couture I got to really got to understand the importance of the unique piece.
What inspired you to become a jewellery designer?
As a child I never loved jewels: I found them too conservative and old. Then I started to draw them for myself and I discovered an unexpected world that fits comfortable with my obsession for the details.
If you were not a jewellery designer what would you be?
An actress or a costume designer.
What is your favourite food?
Meat, meat and…more meat!
If you were an animal what would you be and why?
Every sort of bird. The important thing is to have the possibility to fly.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Drawing on a white wall with my daughter at my mother’s home. I feel guilty for the whitewasher!
