Today we hit the exhibition space at Somerset House to look at some new season pieces while leisurely strolling around, rather than watching it moving down a catwalk.

The exhibitions newest addition this season was the Rock Vault. If bling is your thing you’d be very happy in this space on the Embankment Terrace, where designers including Matches favourites Alexandra Jefford and Fernando Jorge showcased their latest fine jewellery designs.

Jefford’s latest pieces focused on gold, ‘well it is our new found commodity’ she explained. ‘I take a lot of indirect inspiration from the sculptor Chillida, just the way he uses space and heavy metal but manages to achieve a lightness to his work’. Irregular shaped necklaces and statement rings with large engraved plate details really took our eye.
Fernando Jorge AW 12
Stunning green calcite was the first thing we noticed when approaching Fernando Jorge’s stand. ‘I wanted to build upon the fluid collection and I’m calling this the ‘green series” Ferndando started. ‘I like to take historical jewellery pieces, striping them back and just working with the feminine and fluid shapes I’m left with’.

Back in the main exhibition rooms it’s always hard to miss Jane Carr’s stand – a riot of colouful scarves lighting up a room. ‘This is season we’ve called the collection Wilderness with a signature snow leopard print’, said Jane. Still vivid, the colours have progressed to icier shades than last seasons hot brights.

What could possibly make our heart skip more than diamonds and silk scarves? That would be shoes. Camilla Skovgaard’s knock out heels for AW 12 didn’t disappoint. Knockout details included laser-cut details based on medieval prints and a new platform shape taken from locomotive and steam trains – this could encourage us to to take up train spotting.
